My Thoughts On Yuri!!! on Ice

Hey guys! I had recently finished watching the most hyped anime of 2016 aka Yuri!!! on Ice and decided to share my thoughts with you all.

First of all, the opening is really good. It is pleasant and sweet sounding and went well with the anime. They did a good job with the ending as well. Both the ending as well as the opening are different from the usual anime openings and endings, and I liked that about them. The animation was great and I loved the use of humour in the story.

I can’t say that I found the story to be anything new or extravagant. It’s very plain and simple. A typical underdog story. This was my first sports anime so I’m not very well acquainted with the usual plot that follows in them, but the plot of YOI wasn’t very captivating. It was however, nicely portrayed.

We don’t get to know much about every character in these twelve episodes, but they are all likable. Their backgrounds are only just touched in this season, but I’m sure we’ll get to  know more about their lives in the next seasons. The character of Yuri is well implemented. He is extremely relatable and realistic. Can’t say the same about Viktor. Although likable, he is very vague. It’s hard to understand his feelings and his thought process. Yurio was intriguing and he was my favourite character from the series (he’s so cute and grumpy!).

Honestly, I had zero idea about figure skating when I started this anime, and after finishing it I guess it’s safe to say that I understand it to some extent. Still, it was hard to appreciate the performances or to relate with the gasps and applauds of the audience. In that way, I wasn’t as enraptured by the performances. Also, the performances were the same. Every skater had just two routines that they repeated in every competition. That’s another reason why I wasn’t able to immerse myself in the story.

Overall the story was entertaining and while I appreciated its implementation, I just wasn’t able to get into it as much as I would’ve liked. Maybe the hype increased my expectations from this anime, or maybe I’m just not used to the plot of sports anime. But whatever the reason, I didn’t find it to be interesting enough. It was sweet and nice, but not excellent and overwhelming. I did like the characters, and I have a feeling the story will pick up in the next season, so I’m looking forward to it nonetheless.

I give it a 7 out of 10.

  1. If you want a sports anime where you get more insight into the characters thoughts and the sport itself, you should check out Baby Steps. Its about tennis and you can find it on crunchyroll. 🙂

  2. I will preface this by saying that I loved EVERYTHING about “Yuri on Ice,” and now that my bias is out of the way, I will also say that obviously it is totally okay that you do not. To each their own, right? 🙂 I’m glad you wrote on it and were honest about your thoughts.

    Also, I just have to share, since you liked the intro… Did you know it took 3 weeks to animate? Also, the photographs from Yuri’s drunken banquet evening during the end credits of episode 10… *wait, looking it up, yes, 10*…were drawn by the manga artist behind Yuri on Ice, thus their stylistic difference?

    (At least, that is what I’ve been informed.)

    Man, I just love this show too much, and I’ve also always loved to watch figure skating and go ice skating myself. I could fangirl about Yuri on Ice all day, and that music…

    WE WERE BORN TO MAKE HISTORY~~~~!! ❤

      I honestly did not know that. But I’m sure a lot of time and effort must have been put into making such stunning animations!

  3. I agree with every point that you made! I really like this anime despite its issues! I think it’s fun and sweet, and just really enjoyable in the long-run. I knew zip-zilch about figure skating before watching it, so the series was kind of a learning experience, too. I really liked all the characters, especially Yurio (the Little Russiian Pixie as my friend and I call him), but I agree that Viktor’s motivations were incredibly vague, even towards the end when they revealed why he wanted to train Yuri in the first place. And the lack of various routines was really distracting and boring. But I enjoyed the music (especially the ending…or the opening…I can’t choose LOL), the humor, and the romance, so I’d be willing to watch the second season! Great review! 😀

  5. This sums up my initial thoughts of this anime really well. I felt exactly the same way in that I didn’t feel this anime was all that much to crow over, so I can see where you’re coming from. Now for me, I think Yuri On Ice was something I had to watch another couple of times to actually appreciate the little details the animators/writers did right, and after watching it so many times (it’s short, therefore easy to watch straight through) I think it’s grown on me to the point that it’s become a guilty pleasure of mine.

    But bottom line, yes, it wasn’t ground-breaking in any way…I love it as a feel-good anime to watch when I’m feeling down, but the hype is admittedly a bit overblown:)

    1. I’m glad that I’m not alone. Oh I guess I should give it a rewatch then too. I agree that a lot of details go unnoticed in the first watch, and since it’s only twelve episodes, it won’t take very long.

  7. I really like your review! I agree with every single one of your points, especially with the simple plot.
    I wasn’t able to get into the show as much as I wanted because of how Victor’s and Yuri’s relationship was really rushed and full of fan service after episode 7. The music, figure skating, dancing, and animation are what kept me interested in the series, though. The opening and classical music for the skaters were excellent and definitely hit me like a truck with nostalgia (I was a dancer for 6-7 years and 4 of those years I was a ballet and competitive dancer).
    Speaking of competitions, I was surprised to see the skaters dancing to the same songs in various competitions. Yes, it is realistic to the skating and competitive community, but I think seeing the characters figure skate to different routines would have made the series 10 times better. Well, hopefully when season 2 airs, we will get to see more routines from the skaters and some more development from the other characters, especially Yuri Plisetsky.
