Book Review – Eleanor & Park, Rainbow Rowell

One of the cutest books I’ve ever read.

Set in 1986 and 1987, the story follows the lives of Eleanor and Park, two misfits who find themselves falling for each other.

After reading some wonderful things about this book, I decided to give it a read. Despite my efforts to stay indifferent, I found myself having a lot of expectations from the book. And I was not disappointed. It truly met all my hopes and expectations and left me wanting for more. I still remember that slight smile of satisfaction that formed on my lips as soon as I realised that this book indeed was not going to disappoint me..which was around the first 10 pages, I guess.

The characters of Eleanor and Park were different, but realistic. I liked how the characters in the book weren’t shown to be perfect. Nor were their lives. This might have been the first time I’ve come across a chubby protagonist in a book.  Or an Asian protagonist. But I was truly happy about it. Readers tend to look upto the protagonists of novels and mostly they are all so unrealistically perfect that we don’t find ourselves relating to them. But in this case, I was only able to relate to the characters and their feelings and their thoughts.

The romance between Eleanor and Park is the sweetest I’ve ever come across. Some parts of the book were just absolutely heart warming. I always had this little smile on my face as I read this book until, of course, the last few pages (which almost made me cry).

The book doesn’t have much of a story. It’s very simple. But real lives aren’t always filled with adventures and fantasies, so in that way, I have to say it’s pretty simple but realistic, as far as contemporaries go.

I hadn’t been much of a fan of contemporaries until I read I’ll Give You The Sun, but this book pulled me further and deeper into the world of contemporary novels. I loved the storytelling of Rainbow Rowell,  switching meticulously between Eleanor and Park, and I enjoyed both perspectives. This is my first Rainow Rowell book and now I’m looking forward to reading more of her books.

Lastly, though I enjoyed the book and it met my expectations, I would still love to know more about these two misfits and what happened in their lives after. In that way, I’m still dissatisfied as I want more!

  1. Lovely review! This was the first Rainbow Rowell book I read and it was a gateway into a new and magical world for me. I love Rowell’s works because she focuses on relationships. For example, Park’s relationship with his mother and grandmother were key for me in this book. If you haven’t read her other books, I strongly recommend them. Perhaps Fangirl next?

    1. Thanks so much! I did notice that her writing focuses a lot on relationships which was something new for me, since fantasy novels hardly focus on such relationships.
I’ve heard a lot about fangirl too. I might check it out.
      Thanks for reading!

      1. You’re so right. I love fantasy novels, but the relationships are often lacking. Carry On is a demi-fantasy novel, but you should read Fangirl first, in my opinion. They stand alone, but you’ll appreciate Carry On more after Fangirl.
        …I digress. 🙂

      2. I love fantasy but sometimes (in some books) the plot becomes so far fetched that I get a little, just a little bit annoyed, which is quite ironic since they are SUPPOSED to be unrealistic. But I think they should focus on relationships a bit more instead of just wicked love triangles. I still love the genre though. Ohh yes isn’t Carry On about some magic school and stuff? I was quite intrigued by the the summary. I do plan on reading Fangirl for sure! And I digress as well… 😉
        Thanks for the recommendation. 🙂

      3. Love triangles are my least favorite troupe. Well, a M x M x F love triangle with cis members. I think I might be intrigued if the genders or sexualities were switched up… It’s just frustrating to watch two men fight over a woman who can’t make up her mind. That’s not how people actually work. But, with my stretching into more diverse authors I’ve found refreshing changes.

      4. Same. I used to like them in the beginning, but now I do not enjoy them at all. It’s always the same and so predictable most of the times.
I still have to find more books with better love triangles.

  2. Rainbow Rowell is one of my favorite authors. I’ve currently read everything she’s published, and out of all of them E&P was my favorite.

I agree that I need more though. That ending was killer.

  3. I recently read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I hadn’t heard of this author before the book depository recommended that as a read but I’m really glad now I picked it up. I may have to look at some of her other books by the sounds. Thanks for sharing.

I’m looking forward to reading more of her works like Fangirl and Carry On. Her writing style really captured my attention. I do however have my doubts regarding Fangirl as it’s gotten so many mixed reviews.
      Thanks for reading!

  4. Lovely review! I’ve heard nothing but good things about this book! My friend recommended it to me a couple years back, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. It’s very encouraging to see all these positive reviews for this book and Rainbow Rowell in general. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one, and I hope you enjoy her other books if you ever choose to read Fangirl or Carry On. I’d love to hear your thoughts on those ones as well 😀 Happy reading!

  5. This is one of the best YA romances I have read. It made references to a handful of 70s and 80s songs which I listened to and somehow this book stuck onto me. Whenever I listen to “This Charming Man” and “How Soon IS Now” by the Smiths- it takes me back to the bus rides to school… Anyways, thank you for reviewing this. Looking forward to a Fangirl review.
